Yancheng: A Bright Pearl of the Yellow Sea

     Yancheng is located in the east of the Jianghuai plain and borders on the Yellow Sea. It is a city with a long history and brilliant traditional culture. Yancheng claimed its founding as a county in the fourth year of Yuanshou (119BC) in the West Han Dynasty. Well-known for its salt production, it was named Yandu at that time. In the seventh year of Yixi (411AD)in the East Jin Dynasty, it was renamed Yancheng county. In 1983,Yancheng municipality was established and it governed two cities, five counties and three districts. The area of the city is 15,000 square kilometers and the population is 7.9 million. The climate in Yancheng is mild and there is vast land with a long coastline of 582 kilometers. Thanks to its flat cultivated land and crisscross rivers, the city is famous for its rich agricultural products. Yancheng possesses 6.83 million mu of tidal land with abundant zoological and botanical resources and perfect primeval ecology. Additionally, the land forming towards the sea is at the speed of 50,000 mu annually. Since reforming and opening to the outside world, the economy and social undertakings of Yancheng have developed rapidly. Now, the municipality has established a relatively complete system of industry. The city owns more than 30 best brands of products and large numbers of enterprise groups, which are well known all through the county, such as Pride and Senda.
   Yancheng is also rich in agricultural products that turn the city into an important producer of commodity grain and cotton in China. The communications of Yancheng are represented with the features of water, land and air routes. Developed post and telecommunication facilities have been built, and the city is changing for the better day by day. Yancheng is proud of its traditional culture with a large number of notables and simple folk customs. The city is the birthplace of China’s acrobatics and Huai opera. Therefore, it has enjoyed the reputations of “Home of China’s acrobatics” and “Home of Huai opera”. The vast tidal land, the traditional culture and the strong flavor of folk customs are the main tourist resources of Yancheng. There are about 40 attractive scenic spots in the area, including the unique historical sites, such as the Temple of Lu Xiufu, the Museum of Shi Nai'an and the Withered-bough Peony Garden at Biancang; the beautiful sceneries of Dazhonghu Lake and Jiulongkou (Nine Dragon Mouth); the famous reserves for red-crowed cranes and elk; the Taishan Temple, the site of formerN4A (New Fourth Army) reestablished headquarters,theN4A Museum and many other revolutionary memorial spots.
